Review of The Magnificent Butcher (1979) by Steve W — 23 Feb 2013
A very special martial arts comedy. Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao prove they can be as fast and funny as Jackie Chan (since they were a trio). This movie's fight choreography and the director is Woo Ping Yuen, who is notorious for his excellent fight scenes in many martial arts films, as well as The Matrix and Kill Bill films.
The movie starts out very light and comedic. They slowly introduce the characters and some misunderstandings showcase some mistaken identities and funny situations.
However, when murder happens the movie gets more serious. The fights are now to the death and there is lots of revenge. The duels become more brutal and complicated, even though there is still a tinge of humour. This enables for some brilliant pacing. A great...and maybe even a classic of the martial arts genre.
