Before The Matrix, Yuen Woo-ping was turning out classics such as Snake In Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master. It was films like Jet Li's Fist of Legend and this particular one, Magnificent Butcher that brought him the most attention from the western world.
Magnificent Butcher differs in the high-standards of its fight sequences. Elbow knives, cutting fan, Five Animals versus Five Elements, The reason most fans are drawn to martial arts films is for their spectacular stunts and freewheeling fights, and the ones created for The Magnificent Butcher are amazing. The choreographed brutality of the film is like watching Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire fight over Ginger Rogers.
