Review of The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) by Garry J — 07 Mar 2007
I knew that something wasn't quite right with this film. Now I found out that the studio meddled with Welles vision and cut 40 minutes of footage from the film to give it a lighter, happier feel. It's still good, with Welles trademark long tracking shots, overlapping dialogue and use of lighting to reflect character emotions.
I only wish I could see this film as Welles envisioned it. Alas, the missing footage has never been found.
