Review of The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) by Ben K — 28 Jul 2007
The novel is one of the lost masterpieces of the 20th century. This film adaptation was going to be better than Citizen Kane. Reading the novel you can see there are many autobiographical strains to this story.
Unfortunately RKO took this film away from welles, hacked the length and added a fake happy ending. Even so this a genius work from a master filmmaker at the top of his craft.
