Review of The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) by Matt K — 08 Oct 2008
This movie is brilliant as it is. The characters are awesome, the sets are awesome, the writing is awesome, the acting is awesome. The only thing that is not awesome is the fact that it was butchered by the studio.
The movie is a masterpiece for about 45 minutes, then it just starts falling apart. By the end I was just really confused as to what was going on because the movie becomes a series of sketches instead of a coherent story.
But, it's still a very good movie in this form and if the butchered film is this good, how amazing would Welles' real version be? We can only hope some old lady finds it in her attic!
