Review of The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) by Matt C — 01 May 2011
It looks stunning, Cotten is brilliant as ever as is Baxter and there are moment of Welles genius. However whether due to RKO interference or not this is a muddle of a film and to be placed alongside Kane is frankly a joke.
A formulaic, clunky and predictable plot, a couple of stinker performances alongside the aforementioned brilliance and an absolute stinker cop-out ending. Give me dark Welles any day of the week.
