Review of The Magic Sword (1962) by Tim S — 10 Sep 2015
The Magic Sword feels like your standard kind of swords and sorcery movie, but there's nothing special about it, other than Basil Rathbone having a role in it. He's not even the hero. In a way, it feels like a less than stellar attempt at imitating The Adventures of Robin Hood, which also featured Basil Rathbone as a villain.
Whereas that film was beautiful, charming and full of adventure, this film isn't. It's pretty boring for the most part and doesn't really give you much to look at, other than the standard swords and sorcery-type stuff that I mentioned earlier.
It was featured on an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000, but even they didn't really add much to it. It's just a bland and uninteresting movie and slapping Basil Rathbone's name on the poster (and later, more egregiously, on the DVD cover) just feels like a marketing trick to me.
