Review of The Magdalene Sisters (2002) by Travis H — 21 May 2004
The Magdalen Sisters could be one of the intense and gritty, non-holocaust-based dramas that I have seen. The film is based on actual events that occured for over 30 years in the Irish St. Mary homes. For decades families of supposed loose women committed their daughters to a life of cruel slavery in home run by Catholic nuns.
As the movie reveals, there was little holy about these homes, rather they were modern-day sweat-shops. What makes it even more shocking is that these homes remained open until the mid-90s. The movie follows the story of three young women in one of these homes as they try against all odds to regain their freedom and their dignity.
A real drama in every sense of the word. A well done film.
