Review of The Magdalene Sisters (2002) by Steven M — 18 Apr 2010
This is an outstanding piece of work. It skillfully places you in the strange, brutal environment and then keeps you riveted, often lightening the mood with flashes of dark humour. At some points it put me in mind of a dystopian science fiction film where the women were perhaps being brainwashed - that's how strong the sense of isolation is in the Magdalene asylum. However, I did think this when the Mother Superior was in her nightgown and was wearing a hat that looked like something out of THX.
The performances are all exceptional. Each girl's story is played out with real skill and the emotional power can be quite overwhelming. Most of all the stories are deeply human. One of the best films I've seen in a long time.
