A sad, but intriguing peek into the life of one of England's most flamboyant and popular monarchs. While Hytner's direction excels and there are strong performances from all supporting cast members.
It is Hawthorne's sublime portrayal that carries the film onto levels of pure genius whether it is a touching moment of beauty or a hilarious moment filled with Nigel Hawthorne's excrement.
