Rather mediocre filmmaking sparkles with Handel's twinkling Water Music and august performances from Nigel Hawthorne (filling the screen as a maniacal, obscene, bilious George III), Helen Mirren, John Wood (delightfully cranky as Chamberlain Thurlow), Roger Hammond and Cyril Shaps (both uproarious as the piss and stool-obsessed Doctors Baker and Pepys), Rupert Everett (as the bloated Prince of Wales), and Julian Wadham (dour as Mr.
Pitt). A grand old-fashioned historical comedy-drama.
