Review of The Madness of King George (1994) by John G — 18 Aug 2008
Not much to say (historical films always make me feel guilty for not knowing it all already) except this was very enjoyable. More enjoyable than I was expecting!
First thing I noticed was use of bright colours, later contrasting with washed out tones, to convey King George's state of being. But most surprising was how witty it was, and how... strangely accurate it was at times in regards to stupid British politics we have now. I particularly liked the King's characteristic stutter what, what?
The acting was very good (though I rarely "get" period/historic drama) and I found myself interested in its length as an entire film. It is only 1 hour 30. A historical bio-pic.... only 90 minutes long?? If this story were remade today, it would be an hour longer with irrelevant "epic" padding! I think this is why it is enjoyable.. I've seen a few lengthy bio-pic films recently and it is refreshing to see one that doesn't outstay its welcome!
