Review of The Machinist (2004) by Krystal W — 21 May 2011
Brad Anderson creates a very real, yet subtly frightening atmosphere in this psychological thrill-ride. A truly unique film that explores duality, inner demons, and torment--one of the few to truly hit the mark since Memento.
Christian Bale (or what's left of him, he lost 60+ lbs. for the role) gives an outstanding and memorable performance and has completely transformed himself into the titular character Trevor Reznik.
With each engrossing revelation comes an equally convincing display arrogance, confusion, and repentance by Bale that ensures viewers will flounder in the dark for as long as Reznik. A must see.
