The plot-twist itself is, of course, obvious but the emotional reasons which lie behind it are far more shocking and stunningly put together than the majority of any mystery thriller on release today. Bale's commitment is astonishing but of course would be nothing without being on his absolutely excellent performance of a paranoid man, sitting right on the edge of sanity and society.
