Review of The Machinist (2004) by Carrie B — 25 Nov 2011
Though I'm not always impressed with the radical physical changes actors are willing to go through to show that they are serious about their art--I can't imagine this film having the unmitigated impact it had on me without the impression that Bale looked frighteningly close to an Auschwitz inmate.
However, instead of being tormented by outside influences this man is tormented because of himself. This was a suspenseful, psychological film that was at once off-putting and compelling. In my opinion, this was an excellent film, both gritty and intelligent.
