Review of The Machinist (2004) by Kyle G — 22 May 2012
A nice example of true horror, the kind that deals with people and feelings rather than monsters and blood. Bale's devotion is pretty unsettling and prevents any comfortable collapse into artifice, but it doesn't completely save a forgettable story like this.
It's soon obvious how much The Machinist is leaning on predictable Stephen King-type tricks (motif gradually becoming gimmickry) and overly liberal borrowings from Dostoyevsky.
