Review of The Machine (2013) by Phillipé S — 10 Jul 2014
A unique examination of some tried and true sci-fi tropes regarding artificial intelligence and the varying definitions of what makes us human. This little hybrid of drama and straight forward action has us thinking and feeling in equal measure as we watch our hero play Higgins to his cybernetic Eliza Doolittle, a sentient robot molded to look like his murdered research partner.
While the implication is that the pair's semi-romantic chemistry extends beyond the tragic events that precede, we find that the relationship is far more genuine once our cyborg femme fatale enters the fray in place of her flesh and blood predecessor.
Inevitable moral quandaries and stylized combat sequences ensue but a fittingly retro synth score, solid performances, rather impressive visual effects, and a certain cinematic confidence keep this little gem clear of the "$7.
99 and Under" bin at Wal-Mart.
