Review of The Lovely Bones (2009) by Denise O — 23 Jan 2012
Ok, I'm sure the topic alone of this movie was enough to keep everyone out of the theatres. Stanley Tucci plays the murderer (a well deserved supporting actor nomination) of 14 year old Suzie, played by Saoirse Ronan (definitely cheated out of a nomination for best actress).
The story of her death is narrated by Saoirse (previously nominated for her role in Atonement. I tell you, this is one actress you should keep an eye out for). Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz do a great job playing her distraught parents as does Susan Sarandon as the alcoholic, pill-popping mother to Rachel Weisz (although providing us with some much needed humor, if Susan Sarandon's character were my mother in real life, I would've left too).
It is a little eye rolling cheesy in some parts and Peter Jackson may have gone a little overboard with the imagery, but the acting clearly saves it. The imagery on the big screen was pretty, but this is another wait for video.
