Review of The Lovely Bones (2009) by Tom H — 11 Mar 2012
Oh, dear! It's a Hollywood depiction of an after-death experience. Peter Jackson, who has been dealing with fairy tales very successfully, and Steven Spielberg, who is about to win the Hollywood Cutesy Prize, got together and produced a teenage vision of death.
In all fairness, the film has its moments (Susan Sarandon as a selfish, alcoholic grandmother; the adults' dealing with the death of a child) but they are far too few to save the movie. All too often the story dips too deeply into sentimental slop and gets stuck in it like in a bog.
Esoteric claptrap and lumbering special effects add theirs to make this movie unpalatable.
