Review of The Lovely Bones (2009) by Narrative M — 29 Aug 2018
Watch this if: You're captivated by bizarre and haunting stories about death and healing.
Alice Sebold's bestselling novel The Lovely Bones explores death and darkness while moving towards perpetual light. The film adaptation, starring Saoirse Ronan, is reminiscent but different - less nuanced, more condensed. We watched it for its psychedelic cinematography and Ronan's beyond-her-years performance as the murdered young Susie Salmon, who narrates from the 'in-between,' a fantasy world between life and death. This is not a feel-good story. But it did make us feel. By the end, we sat in silence, deep in thought and clinging to Ronan's singular, buoyant voice.
