Review of The Lovely Bones (2009) by Kelsey K — 25 Mar 2012
Compared to the book the movie isn't that great. This film skips around to different things and become confusing how everything is relevant to the story at all.
The book focuses on Susie looking at the peoples lives down on the ground and how they deal with their situation; her father drives himself crazy with trying to find her murderer and lives in the past, her sister grows into an independent young woman and athlete, her mother can't deal with her husband and starts an affair with another man, her brother doesn't really remember her at all and her grandmother keeps the family together. The book takes place throughout 5 to 10 years of this families lives and it works out really well.
The movie however focuses on 1 year or 2 of their lives and tries to balance Susie's afterlife with the families lives and it turns in to a scramble of dreamlike atmosphere. That's what brought me out of the movie is that instead of being like the book and about how different people react to the same tragic event, it was something way different.
