Review of The Lovely Bones (2009) by Matthew D — 07 Oct 2013
The Lovely Bones was always going to be a hard film to adapt. I've read the book and I always imagined, even before the film, Saoirse Ronan as Susie. The plot? A 14-year old girl gets raped and murdered and watches from Heaven as her family struggle to cope.
Controversial. Saoirse's performance is tender; her eyes tell you so much even before she opens her mouth. Mark Wahlberg is fantastic too - the scene where he breaks down over his daughter's untimely death is so heart-wrenching that it brings even the most beefy man to tears.
Yes, it suffers from some abrupt changes from sentimentality to horrifying violence, but Stanley Tucci, a man usually known for his roles as a nice guy, is a sniveling pedophile who, once he changes into his true form, is almost as scary as Hannibal Lector.
