Review of The Lovely Bones (2009) by Charles R — 14 Mar 2015
I"m a little surprised to see the low ratings for this movie. I enjoyed it on several levels though I admit I deferred renting it for several years. Most of my criticism would be at the anachronistic nature of the costumes and period surroundings. The film is visually more like the mid to late sixties, not 1973 (the year of the murder) and later. I was there as a young adult. Take my word for it.
Some of the characters' responses seemed incredulous but I have not read the book so I don't know how much it stays true to the author's story line. Also I wasn't too pleased to see Susan Sarandon getting higher billing than either Saoirse Ronan or Stanley Tucci. Sarandon was just type cast as the feisty old broad who sticks here middle finger out to the world and I doubt her name had much influence at the box office.
