The Loved Ones is a very strange film to watch. It's an Aussie horror flick that seems like a bizarre cross between Hostel and Pretty in Pink, and it's quite an entertaining experience. When Brent denies the socially awkward Lola's offer to the prom, Lola decides that she's not going to take "no" for an answer.
She kidnaps Brent and ties him up in her house to have the last dance of his life. While I usually hate using this term, The Loved Ones is basically a torture porn version of The Cabin in the Woods (which is long overdue for a rewatch), and like Cabin, it transcends genre cliches by being a relentlessly entertaining, gruesome, and often hilarious film.
One instance nearly made me fall out my chair with laughter when the crowns for the prom king and queen are revealed to be the plastic hats you get from those little poppers. The second half of The Loved Ones does take a very strange route and mostly loses the tongue-in-cheek humor of the first half of the film, but the quality isn't sacrificed one bit.
The Loved Ones certainly isn't for everyone, but it's a must watch if you love gore and dark humor.
