Review of The Love Bug (1968) by Ryan D — 24 Jun 2005

With exams done with and our holiday in Gippsland beginning, we (my girlfriend and I) have charged head-long into a slew of moofie-viewing sessions. I caught The Love Bug on pay-tv this evening while eating tea. Considering that it was done by the deplorable Disney, it was quite enjoyable. Silly and light-hearted, it was a fun viewing, and delivered exactly what it was supposed to (***).

We hired out I Heart Huckabees and House of Flying Daggers and watched them both in a single sitting. I'd heard good things about Huckabees. By the end of the movie I was feeling as confused as the customers of the existential detectives but it was interesting and funny enough to leave me satisfied. Evoking thought on existential philosophy was also a cool plus. Not as good as I'd heard, but decent nonetheless (***).

I quite enjoy the recent martial arts flicks that have been coming out lately. More specifically, I enjoy the style that the fight scenes are done; having seen the likes of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and the Kill Bill flicks made the fight scenes from movies like the latest Star Wars frustrating to watch. House of Flying Daggers did not disappoint. The fight scenes, while not quite as impressive as those in Hero, were still a joy to watch. Plus, the plot didn't have the obnoxious, repetitive feel that Hero had. The ending was a little overlong, but this was a small blemish on an otherwise good movie (***1/2).

I have my eyes on some other flicks that I'd like to watch during my break. I'm looking forward to seeing War of the Worlds, regardless of what people think of Tom Cruise. I've heard good things about Ginger Snaps and I'd like to finally get Natural Born Killers out of the way. Prospects are looking decent.
