Review of The Lost Weekend (1945) by Derek K — 22 Jun 2007
Agonizing to watch. as hollywood's first serious take on alcoholism one might expect preachiness or melodrama but there is no generalizing here--it does not make broad statements about alcoholism but rather presents a personal tragedy, the death of one man's dreams.
the only false note in this superbly painful picture is the jarring happy ending--it feels tacked-on and unearned, something slipped in to pacify the censors.
