Review of The Lost Weekend (1945) by Sohil S — 25 May 2010
Right from the opening image of a concealed bottle of rye hanging outside the window of the apartment, it's clear this is no sentimental portrait of an alcoholic binge. Ray Milland is outstanding as Don Birnam, a charming, talented writer, who is also an alcoholic.
Don rejects his family and devoted girlfriend, he resents and ignores their efforts at help, is delighted with his successful deceits, then rages with self-loathing, guilt and shame as he resorts to theft, trys to pawn his typewriter, and rips through his apartment looking for the bottle he has hidden but forgotten.
Brilliant direction from Billy Wilder make this a hugely naturalistic film, which for 1945 is ground-breaking, and the performances from the supporting cast are also great. Highly recommended.
