Review of The Lost Weekend (1945) by Calvin C — 06 Mar 2011
The first movie to show alcoholism in all its dark glory, this Best Picture winner from 1945 showcases a brave and honest performance by Ray Milland (who also won Best Actor) and great direction from Billy Wilder. Though it may seem tamed by today's standards, the character of Don Birnam still resonates and is the prime example of a person whose addiction finally takes a hold on him. This is a dark, moody, and sad movie that doesn't hold anything back on its content.
Grade: A-.
