Review of The Lost Daughter (2021) by Unclewillard — 20 Feb 2022
I adore Olivia Coleman, and though I did not like this movie, her performance was strong. I just take issue with this very feminist idea that it's okay for women to abandon their children, but all men who do are not afforded the same sympathy, though more often than not they are forced away from their kids by the mother.
That's the vibe I got when she was asked by Dakota Johnson's character what it was like to abandon her children, "amazing." As a single dad whose ex just walked (and never came back), I'm probably too close to the story, but I have no sympathy whatsoever for anyone who abandons their children.
The rest was just a mess. The menacing family lead nowhere. Ed Harris lead nowhere. Just a competently shot vacation movie that lacks all charm. I guess it's a solid nomination for Coleman, but I'm betting Stewart will walk away with the Oscar.
