Review of The Lost Daughter (2021) by Rajeevfromca — 01 Jan 2022
Terrible movie and a total waste of time. I love Colman and had high hopes. She acts very well but this seems like yet another vanity project. Gyllenhal shows her directorial immaturity by always zooming the camera in for shaky close ups for no reason, stirring up sinister intent that goes nowhere, and cutting back and forth for no reason.
The story makes little sense, especially the doll-napping. Maybe it is based on some author’s real-life experiences but that does not make the characters any less despicable so there is no connection with the audience.
It could’ve been an interesting story about the challenges of motherhood and ambition, but it ends lamely with “I’m a horrible and unnatural mother.
