Review of The Lost City of Z (2017) by John E — 23 Dec 2017
There's a lot to like here, but there are also shortcomings and your milage may vary. The story is engaging and interesting. It's gorgeous to look at. Often, I was mesmerized. The characters were developed, maybe too many were fleshed out.
The actors all had a fantastic chemistry. Unfortunately, there were a few battle scenes that just didn't look realistic. In addition, this is a rotund film. It could have used a good edit. I found several pieces to be unnecessary to tell the story.
I respect what director and writer James Gray is trying to accomplish as it's ambitious, but the finish left me empty. Final Score: 6.0/10.
