Review of The Lost Boys (1987) by Paul W — 11 Jun 2015
I caught up with this genuine cult teen vamp flick yesterday as part of Future Cinemas"California Classic" weekend. A great way to watch the movie, sat in the warm open-air of what felt like summers final goodbye - fake beach sand between our toes and the glittering buildings of Canary Wharf reflecting in the water echoing the famous opening shots of the Santa Carla amusement park seen over the bay.
Future Cinema screwed up on the bar-logistics, but did they also screw-up on film choice? You've got a classic brat-pack cast with two Coreys and a Kiefer, but the plot is a lot weaker than I remember - falling back on the "new kids in town" trope, and I can't believe a modern audience would fail to see the surprise twist coming.
.. However, Joel Schumacher does a good job of capturing a strangely timeless 80's cool, and the soundtrack adds on a few genuine goose-bump moments - most noticeably soaring over the Santa Clara bay to "Cry Little Sister".
A good night had by all, a scrap on the way out with some retarded drunk getting a bit too carried away with his Keifer fancy dress, and back to reality (Greenwich) on the DLR.
