Review of The Losers (1970) by Private U — 05 Jan 2009
The conceit is great -- the US Army sends in a gang of bikers to Cambodia to essentially win the war. With that premise, I thought it was going to be over the top schlocky, but it was actually very earnest in its comments on the Vietnam War and what that war entailed.
And it did it 8 or 9 years before any of the major acclaimed films of the era had the balls to. The film isn't perfect and sure there are hilariously out of place scenes such as the reuniting of lovers complete with deafening music in the background, but there is a sincerity behind the film that really endeared it to me.
I also would like to categorize it as a weird blend of exploitation and a precursor to action/war films of the 70s and 80s.
