Review of The Lords of Salem (2013) by Darrick P — 20 Apr 2013
Rob Zombie's latest flick is no doubt one of his own. Only Rob could pull it off. And as the credits rolled I realized how much I loved it. The winks, the nods...this is probably the most bizarre film I've seen in a long time. For some reason it worked for me. I can't imagine it working for too many other people. Sure I love Rob Zombie's music and a few of his previous films (Devil's Rejects and Halloween) are among my guilty pleasures but here I believe he finally comes into his own. The film is thick with dread and atmosphere which is rather unusual for Zombie but it works quite well. He's focusing more on mood and it works quite well for most of the film. The last 1/4 is where quintessential Zombie shows up, crazy, zany, grotesque, bizarre and buck nasty. I was loving every minute of it.
Even though his movies are confusing and sometimes incredibly messy, they are enjoyable on some freaky level and Lords of Salem is exactly that. Wild, weird and out of this world. Enter at your own discretion.
Final Verdict: B+.
