Review of The Lords of Salem (2013) by Al M — 11 May 2013
Finally, Rob Zombie returns to directing original cinema (I don't count Halloween or Halloween II), and the results are simply phenomenal. The film has been divisive among fans, and it is a completely different kind of horror film that House of 1000 Corpses or The Devil's Rejects.
Instead of tapping into late 70s slasher and exploitation fare, The Lords of Salem goes back further for its homages to the Gothic horror of Bava, Hammer studios, etc. Blending eerie Gothicism with surrealistic imagery, The Lords of Salem creates a thoroughly artistic and creepy vision that will delight fans of horror aesthetics.
A fine, new entry in the long history of New England horror that stretches all the way back to Washington Irvning and Charles Brocken Brown, The Lords of Salem is horror cinema at its best and most stylish.
