Review of The Lords of Salem (2013) by Daniel M — 27 Sep 2013
I do commend Rob Zombie for somewhat understanding what true horror can be. This film has tid-bits of truly hallucinatory and haunting visuals, but sadly, the good stuff is overshadowed by its familiarity.
Obviously inspired by, or should I say shamelessly borrowed from Stanley Kubrick and Roman Polanski, 'The Lords of Salem' ultimately feels like a modern combination of 'The Shining' and 'Rosemary's Baby', but with flimsy performances and an iffy script.
It's plot isn't all that difficult to interpret, but the rest of the film seems a bit wobbly on its feet, trying to decide whether it wants to be more conventional or unconventional. An interesting watch, yet unfortunately ineffective.
