Review of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) by Darbi S — 23 Apr 2014
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring.
Lord of the Rings is part of a book trilogy that was also made into three movies. Fellowship of the Ring is the first movie out of the three. The movie came out in December 2001, is rated PG 13 and last about 3 hours. The setting for the movie is Middle Earth, which starts in The Shire and journeys through the land to Mordor.
The summery of the movie starts out with the hobbit Frodo. Gandalf the Grey, a great wizard, sends Frodo and his friend Sam on a long, perilous journey through Middle Earth. Gandalf sends Frodo to destroy the one very powerful Ring at Mount Doom, which is where it was created. Gandalf accompanies Frodo and Sam on their journey, along with several others including two men, an elf, and a dwarf in which they form The Fellowship. Together The Fellowship face great dangers on their journey to Mordor.
This particular movie is I would say not the best out of the three but it very important. Reading or watching The Hobbit will explain in greater detail of how this all started, which is the prequel of this series. Some may have to watch the movie two or three times to really understand what is going on, especially in the beginning. The history of the movie is short and can be confusing for the rest of the movie when not fully understanding what everything is about. To make the story flow better watch the Hobbit movies and then watch Lord of the Rings. Like almost all beginnings this first movie starts out slow but does pick up towards the middle. Other than the few minor details of what may not be the best, this movie is a great one.
The series Lord of the Rings is one of my all time favorite series. Fellowship of the Ring does a great job starting out and leading up to what will happen in the other movies. In this movie you learn who every character is and why they are of importance. Throughout the movie there is several battles with suspense like when you wonder what will happen to Gandalf when with Saruman, battle between the orcs and the Fellowship, and also what will happen to Frodo when he is the Ring keeper. There is also a love story within the movie which grabs the attention for romance, that way its not just action and battles. There is a great mixture of romance, action, suspense, and geekiness. The film itself was great with the effects and costume/makeup props. Parts of the movie have certain songs to specific scenes, like a dooming type song every time Saruman or the orcs appear and a more light cheery sound when The Fellowship journey in the open fields. The landscapes were fantastic, large and open like you would imagine the olden times. The characters are all very interesting and different because the story includes men, elves, dwarves, hobbits, wizards, and orcs. There is also another character Gollum that has become the most popular among this series and is the one character many people know of even if they?ve never seen the series. Gollum was once a hobbit but the ring transformed him into an unknown creature that has unusual long life. He also has split personalities so throughout the movie he refers to himself as Sméagol or Gollum and the two are very distinct. The orcs are all costumes and makeup which when viewing them up-close, it took many hours to perfect. The battle scenes of the movie were perfectly laid out and you fell as if you?re there in the fight. Stunt doubles did great in the battles and the actors did a phenomenal job in really capturing their character. Each one really had there own personality in the movie and there?s not a character that is disappointing at all. The ending of the movie was a great place to leave off for the next movie, ends in a small cliff hanger but it does lead right into the next movie which is a great transition. The producers wrote a fantastic movie and took their time creating this masterpiece. They took every aspect of the book and created it to life. J.R.R. Tolkien did a great job writing this series and the people who made this movie happen really captured what the book has laid out. Even though the movie is long it is worth watching when alone or during date night. Out of everything, I would recommend this movie to anyone because it is truly a great movie that you can watch over and over again without ever getting bored.
In conclusion, I would rate this movie around 4-5 stars. Great story line, awesome character development, and the set up of this movie was fantastic. I highly recommend watching this movie along with the rest of the Lord of the Rings and also The Hobbit. Its like a bag of chips, you cant just do with one! If you are looking for something different to watch other than just the Michael Bay blowing things up or the sappy love story movies, then this is the best one for you. When watching this movie, it takes your attention to really capture the full story line and to understand it. J.R.R. Tolkien is a fantastic author and this is a great movie that really represents what the book is about.
