Personally, this is my favorite of the trilogy. Great special effects with just the right amount. It's both a stunning story (from the books) and a fascinating journey from the coziness of "The Shire" to the perils of the "Mines of Moria" and beyond.
Great fantasy flick. If you're gonna let your kids watch it, watch with them. It's not as graphic as the other two sequels, but still, parental guidance is strongly recommended.
