Review of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) by David M — 24 Apr 2014
High Fantasy in the traditional sense, JRR Tolkien's opus is often considered to be a modern masterpiece of the genre.
There's just one problem with it, however: despite having a great story, the novel itself is as dry as dust. For those who find reading it a chore (despite being an avid reader, I'd put myself in that bracket), this film is an outstanding way of getting the flavour of the tale. Yes, I know that even the extended edition has been abridged quite substantially, but I'm quite happy with that! Of the three entries in the epic bromance that is The Lord of The Rings, I would also have to say that this, to me, 'feels' most like a traditional fantasy, especially in the whole Mines of Moria sequence ('You SHALL NOT pass!').
Filmed primarily in New Zealand, this also helped to put that country back on the map (so to speak), with stunning sweeping aerial shots to go along with the soundtrack and impeccable casting.
