Review of The Lookout (2007) by Dave R — 14 Nov 2008
Joseph Gordon-Levitt puts in another convincing performance in Scott Frank's debut as a director.
The story centres around Levitt's Chris, a high school ice hockey star seriously injured in a car accident that is his fault. The trauma has left him both physically and mentally scarred as well as emotionally distant. His future seems defined by routine and repetition until an old contact from his school days comes back into his life and offers him the opportunity to take part in a bank heist at the place he works.
This is intelligent film-making. Each of the characters are flawed, but there's little melodrama here. Instead, it's entertaining, somewhat predictable fare, well acted and buoyed by a script with a great attention to dialogue. Recommended.
