Review of The Longest Day (1962) by Zoran S — 19 Nov 2011
A fascinating, beautiful sprawling mess of a film. It's nearly avant-garde in its hyper-linked narrative of stories within stories. In other words, its obsessive realism and detail turns into the opposite: a distanced formalized film.
At its best, incredible camera movements, via crane and helicopter, observe battlefields and turn them into geometry.
