Review of The Long Ships (1964) by Max M — 18 Jul 2009
Terrific adventure film that pits Richard Widmark's (taking a break from his usual film noir fare) Viking, Rolfe against Sidney Poitier's Moor King, Aly Mansuh, as the two hunt for a legendary lost golden bell named 'The Mother of All Voices'.
Nothing too serious here, just an exuberant swashbuckler expertly directed by the genius cinematographer Jack Cardiff, who shot such Technicolor masterpieces as The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, The Tales of Hoffman, another film in this picture's vein, The Vikings, and even the film that typified 1980's action movies, Rambo: First Blood Part II.
Quite a career. Quite a filmmaker. Quite a movie.
