Review of The Long, Long Trailer (1954) by Jack B — 25 Sep 2010
The Long, Long Trailer is a movie, not a sitcom. The couple is on a vacation, not in their New York apartment. Other than that, the primary characters, Desi and Lucy are the same befuddled couple as the television series. If you aren't a fan of the couple or the TV show, you just don't get it.
Everything that can go wrong on a honeymoon practically does, especially hauling a really long trailer behind a brand new car. Inexperienced with trailering, the couple isn't familiar with trailer courts either.
From buying the trailer to the trip west itself, the calamities never cease. But most of this film is a flashback, as the couple bicker and fight over their circumastances that they end up splitting up only to make up.
Made in 1954, this does not matter to this film as we are at once absorbed into the couple's hilarious trip west. Lucy's stashing of rocks as souveniers unknown to Desi ends up nearly in disastor for the trailer and the relationship. Desi throws out the rocks and breaks Lucy's heart in the process.
The years didn't take away the humor in this one in the least. If you liked I Love Lucy, you will love The Long, Long Trailer as well. However, you'll have to get used to not have their landlords, Ethyl and Fred Mertz around as they are not in the film and that is the only big missing part to this film if you find it lacking.
50% by the critics and community is a bit harsh and deserves better, at least to me, and I am no huge fan of Lucy or Desi or their television show.
But I had to laugh out loud through this one.
