Review of The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) by Jay L — 27 Mar 2011
By the time "The Long Kiss Goodnight" was released, Harlin had enjoyed global success with "Cliffhanger" (1993, $255 million in global box office) and a stunning fall with "Cutthroat Island" (1995, less than $11 million US box office receipts on a $98 million budget that, along with "Showgirls," bankrupted Caralco Pictures).
"The Long Kiss Goodnight" is a solid action film; not bad, but not as good as it could have been. Davis is not entirely convincing as a super-spy and Bierko is just not a credible villain. "Terminator 2" set a new bar for action films in the 1990s, but Harlin stayed with his over-the-top style here, resulting in a cartoonish outcome for the explosions and the audience.
