Review of The Long Goodbye (1973) by Michel T — 15 Jun 2007
A soft-boiled detective story.
The Long Goodbye takes the edge off the old noir films, not concerned with glamour it creates a sense of awe for the ordinary, nostalgia for things not lost.
The film's dry sense of humour and Gould's charm will get you nice and comfortable, then Altman smacks you in the face and reminds you about ugly things like violence and addiction. Where you go from there and what you take from the film is niether comfortable nor ugly.
The end is a kicker and the title song will leave you humming for years.
All that and Arnold Schwartznegger is in it!
