Review of The Long Good Friday (1980) by Jason C — 10 Oct 2007
Almost 30 years on this film looks a little bit ropey in places, but it's still worth it for the final three or four scenes, which still retain their power. One of the first British films to examine the growing threat and inexhaustable power of the I.R.A, 'TLGF' presents 1970's London as a landscape of opportunity for the aspiring capitalist. Shand's diatribe towards the end of the film, his proud stance as a true patriot is worth seeing, as is the climax, which completely undermines his position and exposes him as little more than an expendable component.
"The mafia? I've shit 'em!!".
