Review of The Long Good Friday (1980) by Chris G — 19 Oct 2007
One of the best British gangster movies finds Bob Hoskins' character, Harold Shand, a mob boss, the target of the I.R.A. as they kill his associates and plant bombs in many of his establishments. The thing is, though, he has no idea why they want to kill him and those around him.
Tight little thriller works on many levels but it's Hoskins who caps it as he disappears completely into his role as a man, who fancies himself as calm, collected, and professional but turns into a beast trying to stop the madness around him.
Great film with great sequences, including its final moments.
