Review of The Long Good Friday (1980) by Ray D — 30 May 2008
English Gangster Movie that heralds, in some ways, the end of an era, or the changing of a guard. Bob Hoskins is excellent as the head of the criminal organization who is meeting with representatives of the american mafia to organize a merger deal when associates start to turn up dead around him, and things (literally) start to explode.
The soundtrack is slightly more memorable than many of the time, and the characters feel very authentic--belonging to a London that probably no longer exists (So of course the film is in development to be remade).
With an excellent supporting turn by Helen Mirren, a young Pierce Brosnan in a memorable couple of scenes, and one of the best 'long-take' endings I've seen. Well worth watching, if you haven't seen it.
