Review of The Long Good Friday (1980) by Michael T — 05 Mar 2009
Bob Hoskins portrays Harold Shand a brutal London kingpin who rules the rackets in the Docklands with an iron fist. He has a classy mistress (played by Helen Mirren), loyal underlings, and even a highly placed "bent copper" in New Scotland Yard. And, with Maggie Thatcher hoping to bring the Olympics to London later in the eighties, he is in a position to make millions redeveloping land he owns in the Docklands. And, he has money from the American Mafia to invest.
Then, the IRA starts blowing up his property on Good Friday and Shand is in for the fight of his life. This is one of the best British gangster films ever made and it features a terrific performance by Bob Hoskins in the role of Harold Shand.
Look for American actor Eddie Constatine playing the Mafia bigwig and also look for a pre-REMINGTON STEEL/pre-James Bond Pierce Brosnan as one of the IRA men.
