Review of The Loft (2014) by Dylan V — 30 May 2015
This is a vastly underrated thriller. It's a Hitchcockian affair full of twists and turns, red herrings and femme fatales. Right from the beginning there is a palpable sense of tension that builds to a satisfying final act.
The characters are injected with actual human flaws. Perhaps a few too many, although a group of long time friends are likely to have very similar flaws. It's their similarities that draw them to one another.
Special mention should go to James Marsden, Wentworth Miller and Rachel Taylor (although she deserved more screen time).
The wives here were sadly underutilised and not given enough dimension, and I would have liked to have seen more interaction between them as a group. Surely the wives of long-standing male friends would have their own bonds?
Overall, this is an effective thriller and the Hitchcock comparisons are highly justified. It's taut, well acted and I haven't seen anyone attempt a thriller of this nature in some time. More, please.
(I've given it 5 stars as I think the rating deserves to be brought up, overall. Actual rating - 3.5).
